Peer-Led FASD Support Project

Imagine a supportive community in Manitoba for individuals impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and their families—a place where every person is valued and empowered. This is the vision of the United FASD Community Network

When people with lived experience aren’t given a voice at the table, it can make them feel isolated and unheard. Including their perspectives is essential for genuine connection and meaningful change.

Chris Fillion attended the FASD United Conference and connected with the International Adult Leadership Collaborative FASD Changemakers, which inspired the formation of a new Manitoba group, FASD Mentors of Change. Co-founded by Chris and individuals within the FASD community, this group is dedicated to driving meaningful progress and advocacy

Our network is about creating safe, inclusive spaces where individuals with FASD can connect, share their experiences, and support one another. We organize regular gatherings that foster open discussions and collaborative problem-solving, enhancing empowerment and reducing isolation.

Beyond support, we’re committed to educating the broader community about FASD, aiming to enhance understanding and decrease stigma. This initiative not only supports individuals directly affected by FASD but also serves as an invaluable resource for the entire community, promoting a more inclusive society.

We also extend our support to families and caregivers, providing them with the tools and resources needed to better care for their loved ones.

Our approach is simple yet powerful: support, educate, and empower. We are actively making a difference in the lives of those impacted by FASD, and with the right resources and community backing, our impact is continually expanding.

History of FASD Mentors of Change

The initiative began as the Peer-Led FASD Support Project, originally designed to create a supportive space for individuals with lived experience of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Led by Chris Fillion and a dedicated group of individuals, the project focused on advocacy, peer support, and ensuring that those affected by FASD had a voice in shaping policies and services.

As the project evolved, it transitioned into FASD Mentors of Change, a growing movement committed to action-driven change. This transformation marked a shift from simply providing support to actively developing workshops, advocating for systemic improvements, and securing a place at decision-making tables. Now, under the FASD Mentors of Change, the group continues to drive meaningful progress, ensuring that individuals with FASD are not just heard but are actively leading change.
